Punjabi Verb Conjugation ਕਿਰਿਆ
The 30 most useful Punjabi verbs with their present, past, future and polite command forms - each with audio. Punjabi verbs agree with gender: he eats is ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (khanda hai), she eats is ਖਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ (khandi hai). Master these tables and you can build thousands of sentences with the vocabulary you know.
How Punjabi verbs work
- The infinitive ends in -ਣਾ or -ਨਾ (khana - to eat, jana - to go). That's the dictionary form.
- Present tense adds -ਦਾ (m) / -ਦੀ (f) plus ਹੈ: khanda hai / khandi hai.
- Past tense often just uses the stem + -ਿਆ, but the most common verbs are irregular (ਗਿਆ went, ਕੀਤਾ did, ਖਾਧਾ ate) - exactly the ones on this page.
- Future adds -ੇਗਾ (m) / -ੇਗੀ (f): khavega / khavegi.
- The polite command (-ੋ form) is what you use with elders and strangers: khao, aao, baitho.
