Useful if you already read Gurmukhi and just have no way to type it. Letters go into the Punjabi box at your cursor. Vowel signs are shown on a dotted circle (◌ਾ) because on their own they have nothing to attach to.

How the typing works

Long vowels — double them

A single vowel is short, a doubled one is long.

  • a → inherent · aa → ◌ਾ
  • i → ◌ਿ · ee → ◌ੀ
  • u → ◌ੁ · oo → ◌ੂ
  • e → ◌ੇ · ai → ◌ੈ
  • o → ◌ੋ · au → ◌ੌ

A single vowel at the end of a word is read as the long one, because that is how people actually write: roti gives ਰੋਟੀ.

Capitals for the retroflex letters

These are the sounds made with the tongue curled back — the ones English does not have.

  • t → ਤ but T → ਟ
  • d → ਦ but D → ਡ
  • n → ਨ but N → ਣ
  • r → ਰ but R → ੜ

So ਪਿੰਡ is pinD, and ਰੋਟੀ is roTi.

Aspirated sounds — add h

The puff-of-air consonants are the plain letter plus h.

  • k ਕ → kh
  • g ਗ → gh
  • ch ਚ → chh
  • b ਬ → bh

Nasals and doubles

  • An n or m before another consonant becomes ◌ੰ — sangat gives ਸੰਗਤ, mandir gives ਮੰਦਿਰ.
  • A doubled consonant adds ◌ੱ — pakka gives ਪੱਕਾ.
  • For ਧੰਨਵਾਦ type dhannvaad: the first n is the mark, the second the letter.

Common questions

Is anything I type sent anywhere?

No. The conversion happens in your browser with no network request at all. Nothing is stored, logged or uploaded, and the page keeps working with the connection off.

Why did my word come out slightly wrong?

Romanised Punjabi is not standardised — the same word gets spelled several ways, and some sounds are genuinely ambiguous in English letters. Use the guide above for long vowels and capitals, or click the exact letter on the on-screen keyboard. If you think the converter itself is wrong, tell us.

Can I use this text anywhere?

Yes. It is ordinary Unicode Gurmukhi, so it pastes into WhatsApp, Word, email or anywhere else. If the letters show as boxes, the device is missing a Gurmukhi font rather than anything being wrong with the text.

What do the letters actually sound like?

Our Gurmukhi alphabet guide has all 35 letters with audio, and the vocabulary and phrases pages let you hear real words.
